The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) strongly condemns the murder of journalist Roxana Berenice Guzmán Ramírez, director of the digital news outlet Pulso Informativo del Sureste, which occurred in the state of Veracruz, Mexico.
Guzmán Ramírez had been missing since the morning of June 2, when a group of armed, masked men violently broke into her home in the municipality of Nanchital and abducted her. This Friday, July 3, the Attorney General's Office of the State of Veracruz confirmed, through forensic examinations, that the human remains found on a ranch in the municipality of Moloacán belong to the journalist. Eight individuals are currently in custody in connection with the homicide.
This crime adds to the recurring episodes of violence, threats, and attacks against journalists and media outlets in Mexico, and makes Roxana Guzmán the third journalist killed in the state of Veracruz during the first half of 2026, following the murders of Carlos Leonardo Ramírez Castro and Luis Ángel López Valdez, both killed in the city of Poza Rica. These events confirm Mexico as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for the practice of journalism.
IAB urges the competent Mexican authorities to continue the ongoing investigations and to rigorously sanction all those responsible, both material and intellectual perpetrators, for this atrocious crime. It further reiterates that it is the State's duty to adopt all necessary measures to guarantee the safety of journalists and media outlets within its territory. None of these crimes should go unpunished.
IAB expresses its deepest solidarity with the family, colleagues, and friends of Roxana Guzmán Ramírez, and with the entire Mexican journalistic community, which today faces an unprecedented context of violence. It reaffirms, once again, its permanent and unwavering commitment to the defense of freedom of expression and of the press in Mexico and throughout the Americas.
