The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) condemns in the strongest and most categorical terms the murder of Mexican journalist Luis Ángel López Valdez in the state of Veracruz, an act that constitutes a grave attack on Freedom of Expression, Freedom of the Press, and the public’s right to be informed.
IAB expresses its deep concern over the persistence of violence against journalists and media organizations in Mexico, a situation that has made the country one of the most dangerous places in the world for the practice of journalism.
The murder of journalists not only brings mourning to the journalistic community, but also represents a direct attack against democracy, pluralism, and the free flow of information.
IAB urges the competent authorities of Mexico to carry out an immediate, thorough, and independent investigation capable of identifying and prosecuting both the material and intellectual perpetrators of this crime. IAB further reiterates that it is the duty of the State to adopt all necessary measures to guarantee the safety of journalists and media organizations, as well as to confront decisively the violence and impunity affecting the sector.
IAB expresses its solidarity with the family, colleagues, and friends of Luis Ángel López Valdez and reaffirms its permanent commitment to the defense of Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Press throughout the Americas.
