IAB expresses concern over judicial measures against journalist in Brazil

The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB), which brings together more than 17,000 radio and television broadcasters throughout the Americas, expresses its concern regarding the decision by Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes to order search measures at the residence of journalist Luís Pablo Conceição Almeida, following information published on the Blog do Luís Pablo.

The measure reportedly relates to journalistic reports referring to the alleged use of an official vehicle of the Court of Justice of the State of Maranhão by relatives of STF Justice Flávio Dino.

AIR recalls that the exercise of journalistic activity, regardless of the platform on which it is carried out or its editorial line, is protected by constitutional principles and by international standards on freedom of expression, including the guarantee of journalistic privilege and the protection of sources, which are essential elements for the free exercise of journalism.

In this regard, IAB considers that any measure that could affect such guarantees must be evaluated with the utmost rigor and caution, in order to avoid impacts that could restrict or discourage journalistic activity and public debate in a democratic society.

As established in the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, intimidation, pressure or any form of interference against journalists or media outlets constitutes a serious violation of the fundamental right to freedom of expression and of society’s right to receive information.

IAB calls for this measure to be reviewed in light of Brazilian constitutional principles and international human rights standards that protect the exercise of journalism and freedom of expression.
