May 3 - World Press Freedom Day - Message from the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB)very May 3, the world is reminded that without press freedom, there is no true democracy, no just societies, and no sustainable development.
Proclaimed by the United Nations in 1993, World Press Freedom Day invites us to reflect on a fundamental principle: the right of every individual to seek, receive, and impart information without restriction or borders, as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights.
In times when censorship, violence against journalists, and authoritarian models threaten this right in various countries, the IAB reaffirms that freedom of expression is not a concession from governments, but an inalienable achievement of the people.
Free and independent media, especially radio and free-to-air television, play an essential role in democratic life, promoting pluralism, transparency, and informed public debate.
Defending these values is not the task of a single day. It is a constant commitment of the International Association of Broadcasting and of the thousands of broadcasters across the Americas who courageously and responsibly uphold their role as pillars of freedom and guardians of democracy.
