IAB condemns website blocking in Nicaragua
The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB), which represents more than 17,000 radio and television stations in the three Americas, expresses its strongest condemnation and rejection of the systematic persecution and repression against journalists and independent media perpetrated by the dictatorial government of Nicaragua.
In addition to the constant and multiple violations of human rights and freedom of expression in Nicaragua, the recent blocking of access to the websites of four local media outlets has been added as an additional measure against dissident voices in that country.
This direct attack against the digital space of Nicaraguan journalism is another act that adds to the recurrent violations against freedom of expression in Nicaragua and constitutes a serious transgression of fundamental rights, especially of the American Convention on Human Rights and the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
IAB reiterates its strong appeal to international organizations to implement urgent measures for the immediate protection of human rights in Nicaragua and to demand the end of the dictatorship in that country.
