Radio Cooperativa of Chile presented it´s case against Google at the 50th IAB General Assembly

As part of the 50th General Assembly of the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB), held on November 4, 2025, in Brasília, a prominent presentation was delivered on the legal proceedings that Radio Cooperativa is pursuing against Google before the Chilean judiciary.

The presentation, led by attorney Dr. Sebastián Castro and Radio Cooperativa’s President Mr. Luis Ajenjo, was attentively followed by delegates from over 15 countries.

According to the presentation, the case argues that Google abuses its dominant position as a search engine through practices that harm fair competition and undermine media funding models. Three unlawful practices were highlighted:

  • Publishing news content without fair compensation.
  • Manipulating web traffic flows through its search engine.
  • Engaging in anti-competitive practices in the AdTech ecosystem.

The speakers stressed that Google has shifted from merely indexing news to displaying it directly in its results, thereby reducing traffic to original media sources and weakening their revenues without offering proper compensation.

Although the case is still ongoing and may take years to resolve, it already stands out as a landmark precedent for the future of free journalism, fair digital competition, and the balance between global tech platforms and traditional media.

The IAB will continue to closely monitor this case, reaffirming its commitment to defending freedom of expression and equitable conditions in the digital ecosystem.
