The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) held its 50th General Assembly in Brasilia

On November 3 and 4, the International Association of Broadcasting – IAB held its 50th Ordinary General Assembly in the city of Brasília, Brazil, organized by its Institutional Member, the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters – ABERT.

The solemn opening ceremony gathered leading media outlets from across the Americas and featured the distinguished presence of high-level national and international authorities, including:

  • Carlos Manuel Baigorri, President of ANATEL, Brazil.
  • Tawfic Awwad Junior, Director of the Department of Innovation, Regulation and Oversight of the Secretariat of Broadcasting, and Acting Secretary.
  • Milena Silvino Evangelista, Director of Audiovisual Training and Innovation – Ministry of Culture.
  • Rodolfo Nin Novoa, Ambassador of Uruguay.
  • Counselor Rodrigo Monterroz, Representative of the Embassy of El Salvador.

Among the many institutional and thematic activities, a highlight was the special presentation by Ms. Madeleine Noland, President of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), and Dr. Raymundo Barros, President of the Brazilian Forum for Digital Terrestrial Television (Fórum SBTVD), who addressed the advancements and projections of TV 3.0 in Brazil and the region.

During the General Assembly, several topics of great importance to broadcasting were addressed. Resolutions concerning Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Uruguay, and Venezuela were deliberated and approved.

During the closing session, held on November 4, new authorities were elected for the 2025–2027 term. Dr. Paulo Tonet Camargo, current Vice President of Institutional Relations at Grupo Globo (Brazil), was reelected as President of IAB.

Dr. Tulio Ángel Arbeláez, Executive President of the National Association of Media of Colombia – ASOMEDIOS – was elected First Vice President, and Mr. Gustavo Piedra Guzmán, President of the National Chamber of Broadcasting of Costa Rica (CANARA), was elected Second Vice President.

The Assembly brought together delegations from over 15 countries across the Americas and addressed priority topics such as the defense of freedom of expression, the technological challenges of private broadcasting, and the threats faced by journalists and media outlets in the region.

In addition, the newly elected Board of Directors appointed the new Secretary Vice President, Treasurer Vice President, and the following regional and thematic Vice Presidents:

  • Secretary Vice President: Eugenio Sosa Mendoza (ATA – Argentina)
  • Treasurer Vice President: Rafael Inchausti (ANDEBU – Uruguay)
  • Vice President of Institutional Affairs: Jaime Ramos (TVAzteca – Mexico)
  • Vice President of Freedom of Expression: Michelle Szejer (SNRTV – Peru)
  • Legal Vice President: Flávio Lara Resende (ABERT – Brazil)
  • Vice President of Technology: José Luis Saca (ASDER – El Salvador)
  • Vice President of Television: Jorge Martínez de León (Caracol TV – Colombia)
  • Vice President of Radio: Rosa Medrano (ADORA – Dominican Republic)
  • Regional Vice President for North America: Curtis LeGeyt (NAB – United States)
  • Regional Vice President for Central America and the Caribbean: Pedro Solís (APR – Panama)
  • Regional Vice President for South America: Pablo Vidal (ANATEL – Chile)

The new members of IAB’s Board of Directors for the 2025–2027 term were elected, reflecting the organization’s commitment to plurality, international cooperation, and the defense of private, free, and independent broadcasting.

With this election, IAB begins a new period of work aimed at strengthening the defense of freedom of expression, protecting the activities of media organizations, and promoting technological innovation in the broadcasting sector across the Americas.

Since its foundation in 1946IAB has maintained a firm commitment to democracy, freedom of expression, and the protection of media outlets and journalists.
The work of the newly elected Board of Directors will be essential at a time that demands the defense of truth, the promotion of pluralism, and the consolidation of democracies in our region.

Through this successful Assembly, IAB reaffirms its commitment to promoting free, pluralistic, and innovative broadcasting in service of democracy, culture, and development across the Americas.
